Dr. Mary Mixer Platt set out to build a library in memory of her late husband, Dr. William Nichols Platt, the town’s physician for 34 years. She traveled the State of Vermont by horse and buggy for the design ideas for a building that, today, remains much the same as it was when it opened in 1906. In the 100 years that the Platt Library has served our community, there has been no expansion of space or facilities, although demand for services has grown tremendously. The two small rooms barely allow the display of 11,000 volumes, with crammed meeting space, no table or workspace, and little room for browsing. Our community needs a library large enough to host story hours, quiet reading, research, and book-browsing all at the same time... a library that is comfortable, convenient, spacious enough to accommodate meetings, and that is accessible to all the members of our community.
